FUTURE DEFINITE |
THE NEW ADMINISTRATION OF A FINE ARTS EDUCATION October 2010 - February 2011 ---------------------------------------------- ARTISTS Matthew Higgs, Michael Mercil, J. Morgan Puett, Jon Rubin CURATORS James Voorhies and Lisa Dent This exhibition takes the form of a series of four separate conversations with artists who invest their time and energy to professional practices and to teaching young artists. Participants discuss their perspectives on the challenges that advanced art education faces for preparing students to become artists today. The world of contemporary art is marked by increasingly blurry boundaries among aesthetics, markets, ideologies and technologies as well as an impatience with academics, bureaucracies and histories. The contributions by participants in The New Administration of a Fine Arts Education represent diverse but complementary points of view to consider these issues. The participants have a range of interests including performance, painting, social context, installation and video and contribute to formal and informal learning environments. The exhibition examines variousand sometimes divergentpedagogical models from established academic institutions to independent, artist-run collaboratives and initiatives. The New Administration of a Fine Arts Education seeks to contribute to a discourse on art and education by generating questions about these prescient topics asking how and why we educate individuals to become artists, what it means to be an artist and what are the legitimizing forces at work in this complex arena today. INSTITUTION Columbus College of Art & Design PRODUCERS Diana Matuszak, Nate Padavick ECONOMY Columbus College of Art & Design, Ohio Arts Council, Greater Columbus Arts Council Publication accompanies exhibition. ---------------------------------------------- |
